In June of 2015, the Judicial Council of the State of Nevada created the Committee to Study Evidence-Based Pretrial Release. The Committee focused their efforts on a review the current pretrial release systems and available risk assessment tools. They examined alternatives and potential improvements to the system made possible through the use of evidence-based practices. The Committee chose to develop a customized risk assessment tool and adopted a prototype tool known as the Nevada Pretrial Risk instrument in February of 2016.
In September of 2016, the Nevada Pretrial Risk Assessment (NPRA) was successfully implemented in all seven courts within Washoe County as part of a pilot program. Upon arrest, all defendants facing new charges were screened with this tool, which identified the defendant's risk of failing to appear at a future court proceeding and for committing a future crime.
In March of 2019, the Supreme Court of the State of Nevada issued an Order Adopting the Statewide Use of the Nevada Pretrial Risk Assessment (NPRA) tool.
As of September 2021, the NPRA was required to be implemented throughout Nevada.
