Lawyer in the Library

en Espanol

The Washoe County Law Library's Virtual Lawyer in the Library program gives the public an opportunity to speak with a licensed attorney on matters related to Family, General, and Probate Law. This program is intended for members of the public who are self-represented litigants. If you have an attorney already, you may not participate in the program.

  • Family Law covers matters dealing with divorce, adoption, paternity, child custody, child support, and other family-related legal issues.
  • Probate Law covers matters dealing with wills, trusts, and estates.
  • General Law will cover most civil law matters not covered by Family or Probate Law; such as traffic tickets, employment law, landlord and tenant issues, contract disputes, etc.

How the Virtual Lawyer in the Library program works:

  • The Family Law program is held on Tuesdays. The General Law program is held on Wednesdays. The Probate Law program is held every first and third Wednesday of the month. We are only able to accept a limited number of participants for each program.
  • Appointment times vary each week, based on the volunteer attorneys' availability, but will generally fall between 12-6 PM
  • Appointment requests will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis beginning on Thursdays at 9:00 AM. Once the program fills up, sign-ups will no longer be accepted. Upon sign-up, please plan to attend; if you are unable to attend, please notify us immediately so we can open the appointment up to others in need. Call 775-328-3250 or email LawLibrary@washoecourts.us.
  • Our Lawyer in the Library program is offered through an online meeting software called Zoom. You will receive an email Zoom meeting invitation the day before the program and may access the Zoom meeting using either a computer or phone.
  • The attorney will see you for up to 15 minutes. When your time is up, your session will end and cannot be extended.
  • The attorneys are volunteers; you are not their client; there is no attorney-client relationship and they cannot represent you. After your appointment, do not contact them about your case.
  • This is not a forms clinic. The volunteer attorney cannot help you fill out forms. If you need help filling out forms, there are other clinics to help with that and we can provide you with that information. If you just have procedural questions, Law Library staff may be able to assist you.
