Community Outreach Initiatives
The General Jurisdiction's historic courthouse is located at 75 Court Street. The hallmark of this courthouse is a copper dome which crowns the roof. Underneath, the dome is lined with a magnificent stained glass which provides natural light into the main entrance of the building. A grand marble staircase leads to a foyer where members of the public can view a collection of artwork designed by Frederic DeLongchamp. Located in the historic courthouse is the District Court's Filing Office. The Filing Office staff are available to assist with case initiation, the filing of court documents into an existing case, and to provide copies of legal documents from public case files. Effective January 1, 2016, the District Court will begin the implementation of mandatory electronic filing. This is in response to Administrative Order 2015-08. Also located in the historic courthouse is the Washoe County Law Library which is available to all members of the community. Access to legal books and periodicals, computers with internet capability, terminals to view public court documents and access to WestlawNext are some of the research tools available in the Law Library.
The Law Library offers a program called Lawyer in the Library. It is a free program that offers the opportunity to speak with a lawyer regarding legal matters, free of charge. To learn more about this program or the upcoming schedule, please contact the Law Library.
The Family Division is located in the courthouse at 1 S. Sierra Street. The Family Division offers several programs and resources to help users navigate through the legal system. The Self Help Center, located on the first floor, provides legal information pertaining to court procedures as well as Court approved packets and forms.
