Biography

Education

Judge Weller is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, D.C.

In 2009 he was awarded a Masters degree in Judicial Studies from the University of Nevada with a thesis topic concerning media reporting of domestic violence.

Judge Weller is now a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Nevada with a dissertation topic of statutory response to targeted judicial violence.

Community Involvement

Judge Weller practiced law as a solo practitioner in Reno for 21 years.

He hosted a legal advice, talk-show on KOH radio for 12 years.

He wrote a legal advice column in the Reno Gazette Journal for three years.

In 2000, the Washoe County Commission selected then attorney Weller to serve on a citizen's committee to recommend the future of court facilities in Washoe County. Weller served as chairman of the committee which made numerous recommendations that have been adopted in the community, including the co-location Washoe County Justice and Reno Municipal Courts and the construction of the Mills Lane Justice Center.

2004 Senior Star Certificate of Recognition from Reno's Sanford Center of Aging.

Named 2007-2008 Citizen of the Year by the Reno Host Lions Club.

Court Activities

Judge Weller initiated, and maintains administrative responsibility for, the Family Court's Brief Focused Assessment Program by which local mental health professionals provide assistance in child custody cases at a reduced cost to the families.

Judge Weller is the author of "Covering Domestic Violence: A Guide For Informed Media Reporting in Nevada." The guide is endorsed by the Committee to Aid Abused Women, the Nevada Broadcasters Association, the Nevada Council for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, the Nevada Domestic Violence Ombudsman, the Nevada Network Against Domestic Violence, the Nevada Press Association and Safe Nest.

In continuation of Judge Weller's commitment to make legal services widely available in this community, Judge Weller sought and obtained responsibility for the Family Court's Self-Help Center and the Self-Represented Litigant program.

Judge Weller has been a member in many organizations and committees dedicated to the improvement of the judicial services to the community, including: CASA Advisory Board, Board of Directors; Vice-Chairman of Nevada Supreme Court's Interim Committee to Revise Standardized Protection Orders that revised all statewide domestic violence forms; the Nevada Supreme Court's Court Funding, Resources and Services Commission; Nevada District Judges Association; State Bar of Nevada; Washoe County Bar Association; and, Family Law Section, Washoe County Bar Association.

Judge Weller is a part of the faculty at the National Judicial College and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. He regularly teaches in General Jurisdiction and in Managing Family Law classes.

Judge Weller has been a speaker before several national organizations including the American Judges Association in Vancouver, Canada; the Tennessee Juvenile Court Services Association; and the 2009 National Conference on Juvenile Justice hosted by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and the National District Attorneys Association
